It's a new month, which means it's time for a new member layout to be in the spotlight. My pick for this month's LOTM is Marie by PattyB.

This striking layout captivated me from the first time I saw it in the gallery. Each time I look at it, I discover more little details, like the glittery scatters peeking out behind all the luscious greenery and flowers.

To create her layout, PattyB used That's Me! by Kiki Halbert Designs.

Hi everyone, and happy new year! In the past few days 've been browsing the galleries looking at all the layouts filling up Kiki's galleries.

I'm so familiar with the mischievous twinkle in a toddler's eye as captured in the photos on this gorgeous layout by scrappingirl. It has just the perfect mix of sweetness and grunginess, so I just had to pick it as Layout of the Month.

The layout was created with Recherché by KH's Grass Stains, the perfect kit to scrap a tough little guy who is 100% boy.

Thanksgiving Photo Ops and a Challenge

Kayre (KajunKJ) here with some ideas for Thanksgiving Photo Ops and a fun challenge. My husband's family loves to take silly (and a few serious) photos on holidays. We always look back at the photos and relive the fun that we had while taking them!

* Turkey Preparation (We've been known to name the raw turkey and take pictures with him wearing a ball cap!)
* Setting the Table
* Children/Adults with Indian and Pilgrim clothes
* Everyone seated around the table
* Thanksgiving Crafts
* Outdoor Pictures (We make pyramids of people, lines with us all making the same face, serious group photos...including the family pets, etc.)

And, now for the challenge...make a layout using one of Kiki's kits to make a Thanksgiving or fall-themed layout. She will pick the winner...who will get a prize! Just make your layout, upload it to a gallery, and put a link to the layout in the comment section of this post by November 30.

For most, I know we have the Monday morning blues, but just think in one week, we all get to dress up and use our imagination just like little kids again - for those of us who have children, we have a chance to be creative with them. How long have you been creating LOs for yourself and for CTs? I paper scrapped for 7 years and digital for 11 mos. I started digi when I joined Kiki as a blogger in October 2010. Kiki took a chance on me even though I knew nothing about digi, I could blog so I self taught myself digi and got alot of help from Kiki and other scrappers.

Fun Friday...quick and easy color palette

Howdy everyone..It's Made by Me Inspirations posting again for Kiki Halbert Designs and I am so sorry this is a little late, we have had some construction going on our street and in our home that have taken my time away from the computer..but I wanted to share with everyone this really neat website that I found that I think will benefit not only designers but those of us who create layouts for any kind of use. (the site was actually recommended to me but I can't remember by who, sorry!!)

The Site is Big Huge Labs and they have a way that you can upload a picture and it will create a color palette for you. Now what is really cool is that most color palettes are 5 colors, well this site provides you with 15 colors from the picture that you can choose from. That is great for those of us who create layouts because when we look for kits to use in our layouts not all kits have the colors we want and sometimes we are unsure if a certain color would look good with the pictures we want to add to a layout.

Here is a sample of what you can expect

You can download the .ASE file format to automatically add it to your palette or you can grab the CSS code if you would like to use it on a website. Also, the site maintains the images you have uploaded so you can always go back and create another color palette if you lost one that have already created.

How long have you been creating LOs for yourself and for CTs?
Since 2004. Once I realized there was such a medium as "digital scrapbooking", there was no turning back. I was hooked from the start and have been ever since.

There was a CT Call ad, I applied and received an email stating I was accepted as one of Kiki's CTMs.

Gosh. I really don't have a favorite kit. I'm a layout artist for several designers and I honestly love all the kits I work with. I just created a layout using "Timeless" by Kiki and I so love the way it turned out. I guess for now, you can say that "Timeless" is one of my favorite kits.

Kiki is very talented, prides herself on the quality of her kits, and I love her style. Many of Kiki's kits are very versatile and due to the present economy woes, I think that is a huge plus!

Thrilled. There's nothing like applying to be on a designer's CT and then receiving an acceptance email. Absolute joy!

Any words of wisdom for those aspiring to be a part of a CT?
Anyone can apply to be on a CT whether your experienced or a novice. We all started at the very beginning. All you have to do is just apply, be sure you love the designer's products and that you'll be able to fulfill the CT requirements. Also, don't be discouraged if you receive a non-acceptance email from a designer. Just put your big girlie pants on and keep applying.

Monday Fun Day!

Hi everyone! Made by Me Inspirations here to bring you some fun links and finds. Since we have a really fun Flower challenge going on right now I thought it would be great to look around the world wide web for fun ways to create flowers or layouts with flowers in them and the more.

Everyone loves those crepe paper flowers and how delicate they look. I found this really fun blog that provides a really easy to create tutorial. So when you get a moment check out 'How About Orange' blog for this awesome tutorial.

What kind of mediums have you thought of to create flowers? Lately I have been on this recipe kick, my youngest daughter and I have been in the kitchen flipping through all of my recipe books and hunting down different recipes online, so I thought how fun would it be to create some layouts with Kiki's 'Tea on the Porch' kit. I found this tender layout over at DSA and could not resist sharing it. It's from 2009, but the layout itself is beautifully created with the blending of the background paper and the images used. As you can tell, its that sweet smile on the little one's face that stole my heart for this one.

Blog & Promo Team Call

Kiki Halbert is having a blog and promo team call. Kiki is looking for five people to help promote both her Kiki Halbert Designs and Recherche by KH Designs product lines.

Requirements for the team are creating three blog posts a month, promoting Kiki Halbert's designs in one ISO weekly and re posting new product announcements on either Facebook or Twitter. You are also required to check-in weekly in the team forum. In return you'll receive three kits a month with no layout requirements.

To apply, please send an email with your name, username on most forums, a short bio and the reason you want to join the team to kikihalbertctcall@gmail.com. The deadline is July 20th.

Lost and Found: Wintertime

Here in the Southern end of the world winter has arrived in full force! This of course means lots of cold weather photos to scrap. I went looking in Recherché by KH's store for a kit and found the beautiful Winter Frolic amongst the older kits in the store.

Just take a look at some of the gorgeous layouts created with this fun kit. As you can see it's not just for winter photos.

Recipe: Ham & Egg Cups

As you know, I am all about the quick and easy recipe. And I have another one to share with you. This one is a quick and easy breakfast recipe. The great thing about this recipe is that it can be easily scaled to the number of people you are feeding. And it makes for a yummy addition to any breakfast.

Ingredients
1 teaspoon olive oil
12 slices ham ( thin)
12 eggs
12 cherry tomatoes
1 tablespoon chives, finely chopped
2 tablespoons parmesan cheese, grated

Directions
*Preheat oven to 350F (180C).
*Lightly oil a 12 hole muffin pan.
*Line moulds with a slice of ham so
the ends stick out over the top.
*Break an egg into each hollow, top with tomato and scatter with chives, parmesan, salt and pepper.
*Bake for 18 minutes or until egg is set.
*Remove from oven and leave to cool for 5 minutes.
*Run a knife around each mould to loosen ham.
*Cool on rack.

Hi everyone! Melissa here to inspire you with lots of gorgeous papers and CT inspiration.

As I'm sure you know by now, Kiki Halbert Designs is exclusive to Funky Playground Designs since the beginning of June. Although Kiki has been busy filling up her store with beautiful new designs, I am going to be highlighting some of the older products that she has brought over to the playground.

Kiki is the queen of papers, and her Cotton Candy, Mint Chai and Cherries Jubilee paper packs are no exception. These beautiful papers can be mixed and matched and used with any of Kiki's elements to make beautiful layouts for just about any occasion. Here's a closer look at the paper packs:

By using elements from Symphony with the Mint Chai papers, LadySilver created a stunning springtime layout.

This sweet daddy-daughter page by cityangel23 combines the Cherries Jubilee papers with Grunged Up Frames and Burst Into Spring.

Angelclaud mixed the Cherry Jubilee papers with Amethyst Nights for this elegant layout.

I have a couple of questions for you? Do you like blogging or writing? Do you like working with great digital scrapbooking products? If you answer "yes" to both of those questions, then I have a call for you.

Kiki Halbert is having an open ended blog team call. We are looking for three to four team members willing to create three posts a month and check in weekly in the team forum. In return, you will be able to choose three kits at the end of each month. No layouts required.

New Recipe: One Bowl Brownies

I am back to share another recipe with you. This is another great one for when the kids let you know at 8 p.m. that they need to take refreshments to scouts, prom committee meeting or their best friends house. These brownies are easy to whip up and only require one bowl. Without further ado, here is the recipe.

4 ounces unsweetened baking chocolate
3/4 cup (1-1/2 sticks) butter or margarine
2 cups sugar
3 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
1 cup flour
1 cup coarsely chopped pecans (optional)
or
Dust with powdered sugar (optional)

Preheat oven to 350°F. Spray 13x9-inch baking pan
with non-stick cooking spray.

Microwave chocolate and butter in large microwave
safe bowl on HIGH 2 min. or until butter is melted.
Stir until chocolate is completely melted. Stir in sugar.
Blend in eggs and vanilla. Add flour and pecans; mix
well. Spread into prepared pan.

BAKE 30 to 35 min. or until wooden toothpick inserted
in center comes out with fudgy crumbs. (Cool in pan.
Cut into squares. Enjoy!

How often do you find an alpha or journaling with a must-have font... that you don't have! To let you know the name of the font, there is... WhatTheFont! You have to load the image (for better result, pick a clear image) from your PC or from another website. Then, click continue.

Now, write each letter that appears in the image, if there is a bad letter, leave the spot empty.

Now, we will see a great ammount of fonts. Some of then are not the same, but sure you will find the correct font.

Layout using Symphony

I recently used an older kit of Kiki's- Symphony. You can get this kit at Scrapbook Elements. I love the rich colors in this kit. There are gorgeous lavenders and greens:

I picked this kit because I love working with masks- it is my new thing to play with. There is a great mask in this kit. The mask has flowers on it...how cute is that? I thought it was perfect with this picture of the baby holding flowers.

Also, if you look at the lavender paper, I didn't do a shadow- I used the noise effect and the color went perfect with the background paper, so you will see a bit of a "glow" around the pages. Try this sometime!

Recipe Time - Microwave Fudge

I am back to share another quick recipe. This time we aren't looking at dinner, we're looking at chocolate. It's a quick and easy way to make absolutely delicious fudge. The ingredients are the exact same as a traditional fudge recipe but all the cooking is done in the microwave. Trust me, there is no easier way to create yummy fudge.

Ingredients:
    * 3/4 cup butter or margarine
    * 3 cups of sugar
    * 1 (5 oz.) can evaporated milk (2/3 cup)
    * 1 (11 oz.) package of flavored chips (chocolate, peanut butter, white chocolate)
    * 1 (7 oz.) jar of marshmallow creme
    * 1 tsp. vanilla
    * 1 cup chopped nuts (optional)

Directions:
1. Melt butter/margarine in 4-quart microwaveable bowl on high for 1 minute.
2. Add sugar and milk. Mix well.
3. Microwave for five minutes or until mixture starts to boil, stirring after three minutes, scraping down the sides.
4. Microwave an additional 5-1/2 minutes on high, stirring after three minutes.
5. Add chips, stir until melted.
6. Add marshmallow creme and vanilla.
7. Stir in nuts, if desired.
8. Pour into greased 13X9 inch pan.
9. Cool, then cut into squares.

As usual, I do have recipe cards for you. Once again, it comes in 8x8 and 4x6 so you can print the size you need.

Why Do You Scrap?

This is a question that I think comes up a lot more in digital scrapbooking than it does among paper scrappers? I used to be a regular at Scrapbooking.About.com and I don't remember that subject coming up a lot. But it definitely comes up on a regular basis in the digital scrapbooking forums I frequent. So, why do YOU scrapbook?

This is something I've really been thinking about. Why do I scrapbook? My quick answer is always "to preserve family history". And that is true. I know I don't have a great memory, so creating layouts is how I preserve my memories for myself if not for anybody else. But I know it's not the only reason I scrapbook. Sometimes, it's fun. But just as often it is completely frustrating. I do enjoy the feeling of creating a layout that I really like. I know when I scrap photos of my husband or my animals and they turn out just right that it makes me happy. Scrapping photos of my husband can make me feel better when I am down, because I love working with photos of David. But I've come to realize there is another reason I scrap that I hadn't thought pf before now.

I scrap because I enjoy being part of the digital scrapbooking community. I've made some really good friends since I started digiscrapping in 2006 and I want to maintain those friendships. Yes, I could maintain them even if I were to give up digiscrapping. But it would be harder. And that is the final reason why I scrap.

So tell me, why do you scrap? Is it to preserve memories? Create art? Relax? Please comment and tell me why you scrap?

Mud Puddles Quickpage Freebie

If you haven't had a chance to check out Mud Puddles from Recherche by KH Designs, I highly recommend doing so. It contains such cute elements and the papers are wonderful. I highly recommend not passing this kit up. It's perfect for those pics of your kids playing in the dirt and the mud.

Funday Monday-Must love dogs!

OK, I am a dog lover-hardcore!!! As a joke, my kids tell me I like the dog more. I don't but he does get treated just as good as they do!! I have a 10 yr old black lab who is only about 50 lbs, so he is a great size and the sweetest thing ever. Every year we give my husband a Black Lab calendar and they usually have quotes on them for each month. We were cleaning the other day and I asked my hubby why we still had past calendars around. He told me he was saving them for the quotes!!! So here are some dog quotes:

Photo Tinting Tutorial - Gimp and Photoshop Elements

I'm here today to share with you my technique for tinting photos. I don't use any special styles. It's probably a little more time consuming than a style. But it's something anyone whose program uses layers can do. And it's a great way to get your photos to work with those papers or that kit you've just fallen in love with.

The papers I wanted to work with this time were the Rain Down on Me Volume 3 papers from Kiki Halbert. I think they are so pretty that I was just dying to work with them for a layout where I was the subject. (I think it is so important that we include ourselves in our scrapbooks.)

The problem for me is that I don't usually wear clothing that looks good with pastels. I'm a "bright colors" woman. In the photo I used for my layout, I was wearing a shirt that is three shades of green, including lime green. Not exactly perfect for those papers. But with a little bit of tinting, I can get the photo working with the papers.

To get started open your canvas in either Gimp or PSE. (If you use another program, you'll have to adjust the instructions to fit your program, but the basic concepts should work anyone whose program supports layers.)

Once the canvas is open, pull your background paper on to your canvas and then add your photo as a layer on top of the canvas.

Next, you need to duplicate your photo once. You can do this in both Gimp and PSE by going to Layer and choosing Duplicate Photo.

You now need to convert the duplicate photo to Black and White. To do this in PSE, go to Enhance and choose Convert to Black and White. You will then have to decide which Black & White style works best for your photo. In Gimp, you will go to the Colors menu and choose Desaturate. Once again, you will have to choose the option that works best with your photo.

Now that the photo has been converted to Black & White, create a duplicate of the Black and White photo as I described above.

It is now time to pick the color you want to use for the tint. I find that choosing a lighter color works best, but you'll need to experiment. In PSE, you will do this by clicking Select Foreground Color (it's the option at the bottom of the left side menu and PSE 7). You will then move your cursor over the background paper (select foreground color should remain open) and click on the color you want to use for tinting.

In Gimp, you will need to begin by highlighting the paper layer that will be your background for the layout. You will then need to choose the Color Picker from the Toolbar. (The Color Picker looks like an eye dropper and is right next to the magnifying class (zoom tool).) Now move your mouse over the background paper and click on the color you want to use.

Now it's time to create a new layer filled with the color you've just chosen. First, make sure your top B&W photo is the active layer. That way the new color layer will be right above that photo when it's created. In Gimp you will then go to the Layer menu choose New Layer, choose Foreground Color as fill type and then click Okay.

In Photoshop elements you will go to the Layer menu and choose New Layer. Once the layer is created (it will be transparent), choose the Bucket Fill option (on the left side menu it looks like a small paint bucket with the paint flowing out) and then click on your canvas. Your new layer will then fill with the desired color.

The next step in Photoshop Elements is easy peasy. Click Control + G and your color layer will not be the same size as your photo. You will now need to select a new Layer Mode. I find overlay works best for this purpose, but feel free to experiment until the photo doesn't look too dark and then right-click and choose Merge Down.

With Gimp, we have a little more work in front of us but not much. First, make sure your top photo is your active layer. Now right click on the photo and choose Alpha to Selection. You will then make the color fill layer your active layer and choose Copy and then Paste. You will then need to click the Create New Layer icon at the bottom of the layers toolbar. (It looks like a piece of paper and is on the left side immediately below the list of layers.) You will then need to drag your new layer immediately above the photo and then Delete the old color fill layer. Now it's time to choose a new Layer Mode and just as in Photoshop Elements, I recommend you use the Overlay mode. Now merge the layer down by right-clicking on the new color layer and choosing Merge down.

Now it's time to play with the opacity of the colorized photo and the B&W photo. In Photoshop Elements you do this by highlighting the photo layer you want to work with, clicking the down arrow next to Opacity and then sliding the slider that will appear. Normally, your B&W layer will be more opaque (say less than 50%) and your colorized photo will be more opaque (around 75%) but this is something you will definitely have to play with. Once you like the look of the photo, highlight all three layers, right-click and choose Merge Layers.

In Gimp, we are going to do much the same thing. Highlight the photo layer you want to work with and then slide the Opacity slider that is located right above the list of layers. My opacity recommendations are the same as I gave for Photoshop Elements. Once the photo looks right to you, you will right-click on the top photo layer and choose Merge Down. You will now have two photo layers and will once again do Merge Down for the top photo layer.

Congratulations!! You now have a tinted photo.

Here is how my layout turned out. I could have gotten by with not tinting the photo because of the green, but I think tinting it really allows is to work with the papers.

Layouts without Pictures

Let's face it. We have phone camera, purse cameras, hd video cameras and dSLRs, but we still don't get photos of all the moments we want to remember. I can't count how many times I've said "I wish I had my camera with me" or "I wish I had a better camera with me". What I should have done was come home and created a layout to capture my memories even without a photo. But did I do that? No. :O( So, I know there are already great times lost to my memory. And that makes me sad.

And that brings me to the point of this post. Scrapping without photos. I've seen more and more layouts without photos and I'm glad. Just because we don't have photos does not mean the moment wasn't important. A picture may be worth a thousand words, but that doesn't mean we can't use a few words to convey the importance of a person or event for us.

That is exactly what I did in my layout "Besties". This is about one of my best friends in elementary school. I don't believe I have any photos of her or of us. But I still want to create a layout about our friendship, because it was such an important friendship when I was in the 1st and 2nd grade.

I recently did a freebie with Kiki's colab kit "Sunshine, Lollipops and Rainbows". Go to Funky Playground to grab this one. I did a freebie cluster frame and decided to add it to a layout so you could see just how it looked. I then got the idea to alter the background a bit to use the frame again. By playing with your papers, you can achieve a whole new look. Here is the frame:

This is the first layout I did..fairly clean and simple. Two papers and journaling with the frame added. So easy!!!!:

This time i added a few more papers. If you want to experiement, paper is the way to go. this kit is perfect for Mardi Gras and Spring!!!

Tomato & Egg Stirfry Recipe

I'm back with another easy recipe when you are looking for something quick to make after work. Cause after working all day, a two-hour prep meal just doesn't sound like a fun idea. This week, I am sharing Tomato and Egg Stirfry.

SERVES 4

* 3 eggs, beaten (not egg substitute)
* 1 large tomato, rinsed and diced (fresh tomatoes, not canned)
* 1 large green onion, rinsed and chopped

1. Take a pan (or wok) and put it on medium high heat to dry water off of it, if there is any; If not, let the pan heat up a bit and put some oil in the pan so there is just enough to cover the bottom of the pan (about 2 1/2 - 4 tablespoons of oil).
2. Wait about 3-4 minutes, put the CHOPPED green onions in the hot oil (if you put the onions in and the oil doesn't sizzle or sizzles very little, wait until the oil sizzles before stir frying) and stir fry just until its aroma permeates the air.
3. Quickly pour the eggs into the pan in a circle, so that it is spread out in the pan.
4. Allow the eggs to cook for 1-2 minute and then stir fry until the eggs are well done; Try to cut the eggs into small pieces with the spatula as you stir fry.
5. Put the tomatoes in the pan and stir fry for 1-2 minutes.
6. Put a few dashes of salt into the pan and stir fry again until the juice comes out of the tomatoes.
7. Taste a small piece of egg to see if it is salty enough; If not add more salt; The amount of salt varies by taste and size of tomatoes and eggs; The dish will taste better with slightly more salt than what your accustomed to if you're eating this with white rice.
8. Serve immediately, preferably with rice.

As usual, I have two recipe cards. One is 8x8 and the other is 4x6. I have to admit that I really like the way these cards turned out.
